love poem Linda Pastan

I want to write you
a love poem as headlong
as our creek
after thaw
when we stand
on its dangerous
banks and watch it carry
with it every twig
every dry leaf and branch
in its path
every scruple
when we see it
so swollen
with runoff
that even as we watch
we must grab
each other
and step back

we must grab each
other or
get our shoes
soaked we must
grab each other

“love poem” is a short poem written by Linda Pastan. She shows her design from the title which is all lowercases. This design makes me a feeling that she looks the love poem informal. The poet just sat down and picked up a pen, then quickly writing line by line. So I should read what her undecorated thought about love between lines.

This short poem has only two stanzas. The poet cuts a very long sentence into very short lines; the longest line has only four words. When we read this poem, this design makes it like the wave of a creek, which is the most important imagery of this poem. The first two lines, “I want to write you/ a love poem as headlong” is an ambiguity. What will the poet plunge into? The creek, the love, or writing this poem is? This is a difficult and interesting question, and I think every one above-mentioned is right.

The poet and the second-person”you” were standing on the dangerous banks looking at the thawing creek carry all scruples on its path. Here the creek shows the power of nature, like no one can against the power of the desire for love. And every scruple, the metaphor of doubt and hesitation, is all swallow up by the creek.

Then they grabbed each other. Notice that the grabbing is a metaphor of physical love. They developed a physical relationship because of the fear of desire and anxiety.

In the final stanza, the poet repeats again what they were grabbing each other on the dangerous bank until their shoes were soaking in the water.

This is a very cold scene and the speaker is so nervous like facing the end of this world. The only thing she can do is just grabbing each other closely. By doing so, she can feel she is really alive.

This situation is like when we are seeking something, we go forward by the hope. But the larger hope we have, the larger disappointment we experience when frustration comes. However, we can’t advance without our hope.
